The Bavu Blakes video release party for “Play the Role” was one helluva show. I got there about 11 P.M. only to find out I wasn’t on the list (thanx marc). After talking with Bavu, everything was settled and we got in. The host for the evening welcomed us in with some free cd’ s and a t-shirt. After explaining how the evening would play out, Bavu excused himself to greet some other guests. It was explained to me that they would show the video and that would be followed by a few rappers, and then the video again to end the night.

Around midnight we got our first viewing of “Play the Role” and it was worth the wait. The video is basically Bavu walking around the streets of Austin rappin', but was followed by a few minutes of some breakdancers throwin down (showing Bavu’s affinity for sharing the spotlight.) If you haven’t heard this song on Austin radio, call and request it because “thought provoking records, radio never played ‘em” (little ‘kast for ya). Seriously though, this is a refreshing break from the monotony of cliche rap.
After the video began the live entertainment. Bavu had invited talent from around Texas to get some austin exposure. Rappers like Tee Double, Mooncricket, Money Waters, Pikhaso, Strange Fruit, and Elements all threw down to support their boy from Austin.
After Elements, I expected Bavu to take the stage which he did but only to thank all the other M.C.’s for coming out and he added that he wanted to let them have the spotlight so he wouldn’t perform (another classy move I thought).
Next the D.J. spun the “Play the Role” remix followed by another viewing of the video.
Overall, I was very impressed with the night. I was glad to see so much up and coming talent from around the state and a talent on the brink in Bavu.
