| DJ Dayta spinning for Studemont Project | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
September 21, 2004 at the Engine Room was the setting for another night out in Houston hip hop. The crew at Hard Edge Entertainment was responsible for bringing Brand Nubian, Cunninlynguists, SMUGGLAZ, O.G.Style, and Studemont Project together. I arrived early in the evning and was met up by members Caption, and E-Class of Studemont Project who were also anticipating the upcoming show-both their performance and Brand Nubian's. The night got off to a late start, but quickly became under way when Studemont took the stage. Studemonts progressive and experimental sounds opened a lot of ears and gave a welcome to familiar fans. After Studemont's explosive set, the stage opened for Hard Edge's O.G.Style. The Houston rapper was great and went through a set of bangers from his new CD, "Return of the Game". O.G.Style then concluded the set by giving some lucky concert-goer a PS2 complete with Madden '05. |

After Style finished up, SMUGGLAZ took stage to start a reggae style performance that soon turned into a rampant and hard edged message to President Bush. Politics aside-SMUGGLAZ had a solid set despite the muffled sound that plagued the whole evening. Following the SMUGGLAZ, came Cunninlynguists out of Kentucky, who had some great songs and solid stage show that had the almost one-third filled room at attention and listening in attentively. After the set by them Kentucky boys, the show came to a slow anticipation for the headliners, Brand Nubian. Some in attendance did not wait around for the long pause for the cause and chose to leave before two-thirds of the troupe took the stage. Brand Nubian minus Grand Puba took the stage, then continued the onslaught of hip hop that soon got the disgruntled crowd warmed up to them. The bad sound hindered the lyrics and pushed the beats to the forefront, which was unfortunate. The show as a whole, was great for the regional artists as well as for Kentucky's Cunninlynguists, but did not do much for fans wanting to know what Brand Nubian's new album is all about. |
