The Messina Group in association with Damage Control and Late Night Snax brought Houston yet another good hip hop night out, on the 4th of July. Performing would be VG Skillz, The Procussions, SMUGGLAZ, Lower Life Form, Elliot Ness, O.G.Styles, and last but not least the X-ecutioners.

The night began lazily; much in attendance seemed to be on their second or even third wind from barbecues and beer earlier in the day. This, however, did not slow down openers. Elliot Ness and O.G.Style stirred up the crowd and got things warmed up.

After that, a supposed freestyle battle occured... being that there were only 4 contestants, this, of course did not go too far.

The audience which was still growing were then treated to some Houston hip hop in the sound of Lower Life Form. The duo performed many cuts from their new release, Low Life, and energized the still calm crowd.

Lower Life Form giving people a reason to put they hands up

Where Lower Life Form ended, The SMUGGLAZ began and provided a strong energy for onlookers.

The night continued as the Procussions and VG Skillz put on a really hype show, and definitely showed precedent to what Houston hip hop has to offer.

Between the many sets, the SMUGGLAZ one man camera crew kept a continued freestyle session in front of the bar. Rasheed from Dope House Records kept everyones ears listening as he blasted through some break-neck freestyles.

After all the anticipation , X-ecutioners finally performed and showed H-town that turntables can and were an extension of thought...schizophrenic, fast, awesome thought.

The set was nothing short of amazing. The visuals being broadcast on a large screen behind the six turntable set-up gave an up close view of the lightning quick speed of each cut-up's hands.

After an awe-inspired encore by the three turntable gods, the DJ trio were ouitside to meet with fans, which struck me as really remarkable.

Hip hop needs more acts as genuine as these turntablists.
